The basics of a system are this.
You have Linux and that is the bit that in is charge of sharing all
the parts of the computer with other parts and software.
Then you have the Command line and that is a system called Bash (there
are others that you can use)
Then there is a bit called X and it does "windows (not MS)" stuff.
On top of that is a system that helps software all look the same and
share information, the desktop environments. This is called Gnome or
KDE or a bunch of other names.

Read wikipedea or many other places on the net for more complete info.
There are more layers stuffed in there but I am trying to keep it simple.
Gnome and KDE both have programs written just for them to use. If you
use all KDE programs then they work well together and share data well
with each other, same for Gnome programs.
Ubuntu uses Gnome as the GUI and Kubuntu uses KDE. Both use the same
Linux under the hood and I think they both use Bash but I heard
something about that change, still I think they will both change, if
they do.
