Problem w/repositories

I just installed Kubuntu Intrepid on a computer. I had to use the DVD, because 
this dumb machine would boot from a dvd and not a cd.

The internet is up clean, but I'm not sure what's happening with adept. I 
don't see many packages - not even such staples as Firefox or Gimp. It 
doesn't show the list of packages as it did in Hardy, and the repositories 
look right.

Could anyone give me some help with this?
