Looks like I misread the original post, and it does _not_ say that the 
console login is failing. Don't know if you tried this - by pressing 
CTRL-ALT-F1. If you can get in that way, it's probably a KDM / X 
misconfiguration, and you should look at /var/log/Xorg0.log
