Your card has full 3d support using the opensource 'ati' built-in driver, so
most likely you shouldn't have to do any driver fiddling
The fglrx does not support your card afaik.
I have a laptop with a radeon mobility 7500 from 2003 (I think it is a
similar class gpu to yours) and it runs Intrepid with kwin effects rather well
straight out of the box using the stock unmodified xorg, no extra packages to
install or any of the incantations needed for other cards.
I suggest undoing anything you have done driver-wise and reverting to a stock
xorg.conf and run the command 'glxinfo' to see if it is working.
