It's not just Microsoft. It's Norton and several others as well. Got to
a local computer seller and look at the hard drive of any machine on
display. There's all sorts of "stuff" on trial basis. I suppose there
are enough stupid people out ther e that just send in the money before
the trial period runs out to make it profitable.
When I used to work at Wal Mart there were hundreds of AOL Free Trial
CD's everywhere in the store. Wal Mart made $10.00 for every disc that
got used.
OK, lets say a computer manufacturer puts on a trial version of Norton.
Mr' Stupid buys the computer and sends Symantec the $$$$$. Symantec then
pays $$$ to the computer manufacturer for putting it on the computer.
Add in the $$$ paid by the gaming site for preloading a trial on the
computer, A trial version of some DVD software, Music download sites, ad
infinitum and the bucks add up.
So now Mr. Smart wants to buy a computer with Linux on it. 99.9% of
Linux software is free so the computer manufacturer loses out on that
extra $$$ from all the trial software manufacturers. Now the computer
manufacturer isn't going to lose if he can help it so he charges Mr.
Smart a little extra. Probably less than a Windows computer but still
more than it should cost.
