Kppp, pppd and Dialup Internet

Hello everyone, and Happy Easter to you all...

I am confined to dialup internet at this location (my holiday house). Recently, I tried upgrades on my holiday computer ... and installed a copy of Kubuntu (8.04). Mostly it just works 100%, but I am having difficulties with a flakey pppd program ...

My login works ... and I begin to download mail. After a couple of minutes for no accountable reason, the pppd fails ... and I lose the connection. I remember that this is a known issue with pppd ...

Could someone please direct me to a page/website where this issue is discussed ... and solutions suggested?

Thank you

Richard

PS To developers: Please don't neglect those of us who are restricted to dialup. I note that dialup is being moved over in favour of adsl type connections in newer distributions. I am reduced to a mini- linux (puppylinux) just to have connectivity for the present. Kubuntu runs so well on this 400MHz VIA-engined computer with 512 Megs of RAM, that it's a shame to not be able to use it to connect to the world. Thanks again

R
