** RESOLVED ** sudo update - sudo safe upgrade

From the command line, where the boot process stops, I entered sudo aptitude 
update and sudo aptitude safe upgrade.  It did not succeed, however I then 
entered sudo apt-get install kubuntu desktop.  It fixed everything on restart.

I have been with this problem for quite a while, and just when I enter proper 
posts to solve the problem, I got it solved.  Thanks All.  Sorry for wasting 
your read-the-email time.
