Kubuntu 8.10 does not recognise external HD with NTFS and FAT32 partitions.

Have you tried a usb cable with two connectors to the desktop.  I was having 
this problem with Kubuntu, but not Ubuntu, Debian Lenny or Windows XP.  The 
problem was occurring with a USB powered external drive, but not a self-
powered drive or a USB stick.  By using both connectors to the desktop for 
extra power, I solved the problem.  No idea why this was only a problem with 
Kubuntu.
