Open Konsole and type the command 'uname -a' (without the quotes).  The 
architecture is near the end as in my machine:

wulfy at wulfy-desktop:~$ uname -a
Linux wulfy-desktop 2.6.27-12-generic #1 SMP Thu Feb 5 09:26:42 UTC 2009 
x86_64 GNU/Linux
wulfy at wulfy-desktop:~$

It is more to do with the version of the OS than the hardware...  you 
can run a 32-bit OS on a 64-bit machine (but not vice versa).
