how to get rid of folder view simulates desktop

In desktop options (the same dialog where you choose your background
image), there is a menu bar that lets you choose whether the desktop
is a folder view or a plasma canvas.  Plasma canvas is default, but it
sounds like yours somehow got switched to the desktop icons.
