That won't help, because... they won't install in the first place :-)

I have never enabled the PPA 4.2 repository.

That was my (explicit) guess, although they would not confirm that. I don't
know why not; it's very difficult for a user to know what to do when the
Canonical folk simply mark something as "invalid" but then won't explain
why they have done so. I think you're right that that's the reason, but it
sure would have been helpful if they'd confirmed that.
