While this may work, it will most probably not be needed.

I assume that any of your two computers will have ethernet?

If so, simply plug each of them into your router's ethernet ports and on 
you go. Should your router not have multiple ports or should your router 
be elsewhere, you can use a _crossover_ network cable between your two 
machines.

The good news:

Modern PCs (i.e. the network adapters inside modern PCs) quite often do 
not really care, whether the cable it straight or crossover. So it will 
be worth to try with a "normal" ethernet cable between your two hosts, 
before going the FireWire route.
