Now when I boot up, just before the GUI appears there are about 5 lines on the 
screen that repeat the selfsame error.

I think from grub, but I am not sure.

I have booted 3 times in a row.  It is seeming to stabilize a bit.

I don't think it is 4.2; I have not attempted that upgrade yet.  As spooky as 
everything is, that was a troublesome upgrade for me last time.

Kmail is not in the menu like before.  I am having  trouble remembering the 
differences.  Desktop effects were declined.  I forget the reason, but they 
can't be used.  It may have something to do with my monitor.  It is an old 17" 
CRT I am using so I can have 2 screens and 2 systems going at the same time.
