Kubuntu 8.10 does not recognise external HD with NTFS and FAT32 partitions.

Hopefully, it will help.

But take into consideration that this is advice from 2005. Way back when 
usb mounting was lousy, while nowadays it should work out of the box and 
without any user intervention.

This is why the usb Disk behaviour on Bas' machine is so strange.
