you should start the PC with a live CD in
recovery mode, then run fsck on /dev/sda1 (or whatever is the number
of hard disk partition that you need to check.

Is this the way to go with kubuntu Miriam? I've always, up to now, 
used telinit 1 to go into single user mode, then umount /dev/whatever. 
fsck /dev/whatever and mount /dev/whatever and then telinit 5 
back into multi-user. Is this not now good practice? Sorry, I've left 
out all the flags.
