No login screen after update to 4.2.90

Last night by mistake I did upgrade to the 4.2.90 beta from 4.2.4. Now when
I switch on the machine I don't have the login screen but a sign "No greeter
widget plugin loaded. Check the configuration". After that - nothing.  My
questions:

1) How to fix this?
2) How can I go back to KDE 4.2.4?

I have only access to the machine through the safe boot mode (i.e.
terminal).

Please help as cannot get in... Thanks.
