Programs that are already installed can be run by clicking them in the K
menu.
Probably the first bit about Linux that is very different to Windows
that you have to get used to is the concept of repositories. Basically,
they are big databases with thousands of pieces of software in them.
When you want some software, rather than downloading it from that
software's website, it is usually best to download it from the
repository. You can browse the repository and install software by
pressing K menu --> Applications --> System --> Package Manager.
Playing media is theoretically a simple task of clicking on it, but in
practice it's not all that simple. Most common media formats (MP3s,
DVDs, MPEGs, WMVs, WMAs, etc) are in some way restricted, usually by
things like patents, that mean making free software to play them is
actually against the law in many countries. If it isn't in yours, or you
don't care, you can get around this by installing the
kubuntu-restricted-extras package from the repository (see above). Then
pretty much every media format under the sun will be playable.
Installing that will also install a few other things, such as Flash
player, some Windows fonts, Java, etc, that have other restrictions on
usage.
