About your questions:
Do the switch user option in KDE work for you?
Yes, it works
Can you start in failsafe mode?
No. I get the error: "Xsession: unable to launch failsafe Xsession -
- - x-terminal-emulator not found; aborting"

You could try CTRL-ALT-F1 but i guess thats what you mean. Do the
switch user option in KDE work for you? Can you start in failsafe
mode? It looks like your console has not been setup. I tried to find
where the the consoles is started but failed, it was easier with sys-v
and /etc/init now i don't know where to look.
