Adding app shortcuts to panels

Hello all, stupid question:
KDE 4.blah : How do you add an application icon to the panel? 

I have a panel at the top of the screen. The only way I have found thus far is 
to use the "Lancelot" launcher and drag app icons from there onto the panel. 
The other launcher widgets just confuse me. This Lancelot method is prone to 
crashes and odd freezes of the widget...

I have several apps that just don't appear in any menu system and want to add 
them like the good old KDE 3.5 days : Right click on a panel and add them 
directly from the menu, even if they were manually constructed in that 
properties dialogue (for the .desktop file involved.)
