xdmcp broken, KDE3 to KDE4 kdm remote login

I installed Kubuntu 9.04 a couple weeks ago and, with the except of the
recent kernel update, have applied all the bug fixes and security
updates. Except for the recent kernel update.
Can KDE3 connect to KDE4 using remote login (initiated from the kdm
login screen)?
I seem to have the same problem mentioned here (Sep 12 2008):
xdmcp broken
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kubuntu-users/2008-September/031451.html
except Jim didn't say he was connecting from KDE3 to KDE4, just that he
couldn't connect after installing Kubuntu and KDE4.
netstat -lu shows xdmcp is listening (udp, port 177), and there's no
firewall between the computers on my LAN.
I'm able to connect with the same computers when I've rebooted into
Slackware (currently running KDE3).
I found the question somewhere else, and the "solution" for that said it
was a bug which could be resolved by replacing (in the hosts file)
127.0.1.1 to the LAN IP address of the server. That didn't work.
In my Xaccess file, I have this line uncommented
* #any host can get a login window
I've also tried it with having this line uncommented at the same time.
#* CHOOSER BROADCAST #any indirect host can get a chooser
In my kdmrc, I have this
[Xdmcp]
Enable=true
Willing=/etc/kde4/kdm/Xwilling
Thanks, in advance, for any suggestions.
