Probably not.  I don't know when it arrived, but VBox appears to be moving
at a considerably more rapid pace than VMWare these days.  Whether that
will keep up now that they're fairly similar, I don't know.

You bet.  VBox won't let you _create_ a vmdk image, but it has no problem
using one.
