"highlighting the old subject to delete it" does NOT start a new message thread - it just 
continues the same message thread but with a different subject line.
The information for the 'id' of a message (whether or not it belongs to a specific thread or not) 
is contained within the Headers of the message and cannot be changed simply by changing the 
subject line.

It is much better to right click the email address and choose 'Compose Mail To'.
