I always log in to CUPS using the administrator ID/password that is entered as
(k)ubuntu is installed. Then it works for me.
Note that I'm not using Jaunty. I was going to do a fresh install of the AMD64
version, but threads like this tend to put me off. Last night I downloaded
the AMD64 version of Hardy, which I will probably end up using instead. I
know that it works. For instance, I installed Hardy for a friend ages ago.
Installing her HP printer consisted of plugging it into a USP port and
switching it on. Period. There was a couple of little messages on the screen,
if I remember correctly, something like "Hey, somebody plugged in a printer,
I wonder what it is" followed by "Oh, it's an HP (correct model number)"
followed by "OK, the printer is ready to use". And it was. And it's worked
perfectly ever since. I like that.
