Steven I didn't do anything special. Like you I didn't know when a
transfer was completed but noticed this blue circular icon on the panel.
When clicking on it I got the transfer progression shown to me. By the
way if you have multiple transfers, the same icon when clicked on, will
show the progression of each transfer separately.
As I said, though, I don't know how to make this a open as default.
