KDE4 slow graphics

I've spent the past day working in gnome. The most noticeable difference 
to kde is graphics speed. At times, Firefox is a relative bowl of 
molasses, Netbeans can take an age opening dialogues, but in general kde 
drags by comparison.

This didn't make much sense to me, so back in kde, I nosed around. 
Interestingly, I found a nautilus background process running - its window 
title is: x-nautilus desktop. When I deleted this, kde speeded up 
significantly. (On investigation, this loads when nautilus is opened, but 
remains after it is closed. It might survive a logout.)

Just thought this might be of use to some folk experiencing similar 
slowdowns.
