I was attempting to upgrade, and the instruction on how included a task that I
was refused due to permission. There have been instances, like when I had to
edit the boot grub menu to make an addition that I had to do it by open
Dolphin in root, so since this instruction required a change that was withheld
due to permission and included the comment saying that uid1000 did not have
ownership uid0 did, I attempted to change the permission. After trying to
open Dolphin in root, I got the same error messages, however I was still able
to edit the boot menu, so I tried here too.

I have a concern about that too. When using my 9600 nVidia GForce video card,
I had to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst to include an instruction pci=nomsi to
get the required video drivers to work. After I did that, it still did not
allow me to use the new video card, so I don't know if the video card has
become defective or not, but to get the computer with a gui, I reinstalled the
onboard video which is nvidia GForce 8400, which shares ram memory. It uses
different drivers, which I did change, and does not require the pci=nomsi
instruction required by the later drivers that were required for the 9600
video card. As a result, now that I am using the older video drivers, do you
think I should edit out the pci=nomsi instruction. There is another thing I
am working around at the moment that has an impact on evaluating the symptoms;
I have 8gb of ram. It is also one of the reasons I needed to use Jaunty in
the first place to get my system to recognize the additional 4gb of ram not
recognized by Intrepid. But since the current problems with no video, if I
put ram in the 3rd and 4th slots, I lost video again, whether I am using the
9600 GForce or the 8400 GForce.

A bit confusing, because many are not faced with this kind of problem yet, but
it is the one I must work through.

While waiting I have been working on several problems, and I am unsure of my
memory at the moment, is there a way for me to view the history of the last
several entries I made using the konsole to help me to remember more
accurately?

I lost the system due to an unknown crash and just got it running again. I am
running with only half the memory installed and using a different video card at
the moment. It is the only way I am able to have a screen right now.

I thought by upgrading to kde 4.2.3, it might include some additional helps
and fixes that would correct the problems that caused me to lose the system. I
was not doing anything that should have caused a system crash when it
happened. In fact, I thought maybe the motherboard had broken; but I have
gotten a working system, albeit not top notch, so the motherboard must be OK.

My system has required that I use an operating system a bit over my head. I
could not get it running using Intrepid and have had to use Jaunty since it
was Alpha, just to have a working system. My motherboard and it's chip, the
nVidia 780a and the video card would not work with less than the Jaunty level
of technology. I don't understand all the reasons, however, it is the case.

Not understanding some of this, I found that there was a thing called a PPA
that I had to have properly installed to have the change in desktops take
place. I have tried every instruction I can find relating to getting things
right, but have slipped up somewhere. Additionally, I believe I have the
proper PPA installed. It is not preceded by the # sign, but it is in the
list. I hope I haven't confused you. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Steven
