Everything worked fine if I only put memory in the first two slots.
Later I tried one of the memory sticks that was in the 3rd slot,
exchanging it for the one in the 2nd slot that was working. That stick
also worked, so it appears that I have a problem in the outer slots that
doesn't seem to be a stick of memory, most likely a motherboard
problem. Since it appears that the memory is OK, I tried the Video Card
to see if it would work with just the first two slots with memory. It
booted up and provided the initial screen, but would not continue
through the boot sequence. I removed the video card, expecting the
system to boot as recently using the onboard video again, but now it
won't boot again. I have never been able to boot to the live CD,
however, I did not try the first time I got a screen again, but the
computer opened and functioned normally for a while with onboard video
and 2 memory sticks in the first two slots. The video card also worked
for a short time since the original crash. So apparently the only thing
that is failing is the motherboard in the area of the outer two slots.

I am writing this from my old box, which isn't my favorite situation, I
have been spoiled with speed for too long. I will have to wait for the
change from kde 4.22 to kde 4.2.3 for a while. Thanks everyone who
helped. This has been and will continue to be the best source for help
regarding Kubuntu and KDE applications.
