I'm running on a VAIO (different model) and I get the same problem - the new Device Notifier doesn't do anything. I can get around it by going to a terminal and typing 'mount /dev/cdrom' after I insert a disc.
The actual problem however appears to be that HAL polling is not enabled for the drive, and no command I can find will cause it to be enabled. I think it might be a Sony BIOS issue.
