ongoing video problems

Gave up on getting nvidia 7900 working on install.  Just tried with ati 4850
on standard install I rapidly get to black screen with occasional flashes of
a small box in center with a message but the box does not stay long enough
to read. tried to instal with safe video and during install the text is
microscopic and the icons full size but very jagged.  I then did alternative
install with text which goes fine till booting into os and then I am back at
the black screen with the flashes of text box.

When grub comes up (text is fine) I have the option of booting into root
shell with networking.  What can I do from this point and please explaine as
to a total noob.
