Problems with KPilot and syncing

I have a new problem.  I'm trying to sync my Handspring (yeah, I know, it's 
old, but it works!) with the system and have been having a hard time.

First issue:  The USB icon says there are no USB devices connected, when 
clearly my USB cable to the visor is connected and charges the visor.

This may be part of the second issue, which is, even though I created a soft 
link to create /dev/ttyUSB1 and /dev/ttyUSB2 

ln -s /dev/usbdev2.1_ep00 /dev/ttyUSB1

the kpilot software can't seem to find or open the port.

I see where it says there is no .service for the .kde.kpilot.daemon

Is that where the problem lies?

Can anyone point me in the proper direction?
