Yes, it would probably fetch some Gnome packages. But AFAIK the Gnome 
applet works well with the plasma panel, that's why I suggested to try 
it.

Although it is installed as a default, the network manager isn't vital. 
It is useful to have some sort of network manager but I can live without 
it, at least on my desktop with a static connection. Wicd is just 
another network manager with other properties than the default nm. 
Anyway, from your other mail I see that wicd doesn't work for you, 
unfortunately. Therefore you should maybe try the Gnome applet after 
all.
