I am sorry, I forgot to tell you that the installation choice during 
partitioning was: Wipe out everything and install Kubuntu. Guess how 
many partitions it creates?

Yawn. Telling grub to treat the root partition (no separate boot 
partition possible with the LiveCD installer) as the root device is 
usually wrong now eh? Oh guess what? Kubuntu Jaunty is the ONLY 
operating system installed.
