KDE 4 is certainly stable. I don't particularly like a lot of it, but
what's there is stable :-(

grub2 isn't a serious upgrade - sure if something went wrong, you wouldn't
be able to boot... but you run that risk every time you get a kernel
upgrade anyway.
Switching to ext4 strikes me as just plain silly.
