What I did in the past:
Use a knoppix Boot CD or Boot DVD,

then use the following start parameter:
knoppix screen=1400x1050

then start the PC. If the resolution is what you need, copy
/etc/X11/xorg.conf to an usb stick and use this file for 
your working linux.

I do not know whether it helps, but maybe it is worth to try.
