Can't detect an external 500GB HDD

I fixed the problem at least on one of my machines.
It was:
a) SATA port was not enabled in BIOS ... AND
b) when I was connecting through a USB cable the SATA cable still hanging 
connected into the port on HDD drive. Interesting to note that it was not 
connected to the SATA port on the computer. When I just pulled the cable out 
of the SATA port of HDD my PC immidiately recognized the drive. I guess there 
is some intelligent built into this external HDD drive to allow you only one 
connection at a time.
