This can also depend on the configuration of the VPN server you are connecting to. Some permit traffic to be split like you describe, others simply route all traffic through the VPN. The latter case is frequently used by the kind of snide, untrustworthy companies who want to know what their employees are up to when they're not in the office. Like the one I work for... :(
