It may be grub version incompatibilities. In Karmic grub2 is 
incompatible with systems using grub. Grub2 assumes everybody is using 
grub2 and generates device references accordingly, which stuffs up 
systems using grub because the device references that it reads menu.lst 
are not the same as what grub2 uses and it does not translate correctly.
