i doubt this is a password issue here.
if the OP can try to do a console login first, and confirm if this goes
succesful or not.
if not, then it's a password issue, can be resolved through a recovery
process.
if it does work, as i expect, it's a kdm issue. not sure where to start
here, but a look at the xorg logs ca be useful. also a startx comman
issued on TTY1, can leave some interesting output.
