Installing Hardy into a 'wasted' partition

I can't say a lot about XFCE myself Jonesy, but for similar reasons I'd
expect enlightenment to also remain available. If you don't fall in love
with XFCE you might consider 'E'...

Speaking for myself, I never tried XFCE mostly because I was a KDE
die hard since Kde 2.x... And until kde4 I had no incentive to try other
desktops (Except that thanks to redhat I knew I didn't like gnome's desktop
environment) 

Then when I was first exposed to kde4 I started looking really hard for
an alternative to kde. I read that: "A strong point of Xfce is its ease
of configuration - it is driven entirely by the mouse." Since I'm very
keyboard centric I figured I'd look elsewhere. 

Then I read something that implied that enlightenment could be configured
to be run almost completely from the keyboard and I tried e16, which is,
I think still available for *buntu... And I liked it a lot. it didn't
have so many bells & whistles as KDE but it was reliable.  Then I found
out about e17. Which I now use most of the time. It's configuration is
unfortunately mouse intensive, But once configured, I can again let that
durned rodent collect some dust...  E17 still isn't so full of bells and
whistles as kde, but it has a more basic amenities than e16.  And unless
your 'extremely' keyboard centric I'd recommend starting with e17. (Though
both e16, & e17 are quite mouse friendly)

Which describes a method based on adding an E17 repository to karmic's 
sources.list 

Of course it's assumed you have "Ubuntu" But I can tell you the Jaunty
version of the same repo works for me on top of kubuntu 9.4... 

I'm sure that I'll eventually have to upgrade my kubuntu version. When I
do I'll probably poke around what ever passed for kde, at least long
enough to reconfigure the keyboard shortcuts. It could be that they will
have finally made kde worth using again. But their going to have to go a
long way to win me back from 'E'...
