Syslog on idle tty not possible . . .

Hi all,

I have Kubuntu 9.10 now. There's a few things that strikes me with this
edition. The problem I'd like to address here is the inability to have kernel
and other syslog messages displayed on tty 10 (or 11 or 12). All I get is a
blinking cursor . . .
I have the same code in /etc/syslog.conf which looks like this: (until 9.10,
this worked fine).

/etc/syslog.conf:
# I like to have messages displayed on the console, but only on a virtual
# console I usually leave idle.
#
kern.*;\
	kern.=crit;\
	kern.=err;\
	kern.=alert;\
	kern.=emerg;\
	kern.=panic;	/dev/tty10

daemon,mail.*;\
	news.=crit;news.=err;news.=notice;\
	*.=debug;*.=info;\
	*.=notice;*.=warning	/dev/tty11

# Orginale Konfiguration:
daemon,mail.*;\
	news.=crit;news.=err;news.=notice;\
	*.=debug;*.=info;\
	*.=notice;*.=warn	/dev/tty12

If someone has a clue, I'd be very grateful. What am I without a good and
available syslog!?
