I dunno,
I experienced some problems and launching multimedia application with command
line didn't help me, but the problem went away. It appears ubuntu has some
self healing capacity.
*Did you try to reboot?*

As a side note (I have Pulse Auto and HDA NVidia installed) I got a warning a
couple of times when I turned the computer on, that NVidia wasn't working
(with the message: "do you want to remove?/discard?/ignore forever? ...from my
failing memory", to which I answered no). It wouldn't reappear on next reboot
and I haven't seen this message for weeks, go figure...updates?

BOFH excuse #301: appears to be a Slow/Narrow SCSI-0 Interface problem
