Dear Ray,
Kubuntu 8.04 is very different from 9.10 or 10.04. Also different 3G usb
modems act differently - I have one where all I have to is "eject the
CD" and then it works via KPPP as described.
In short Ray - try searching internet for something like "dodo usb modem
linux" and see what comes up first. Second, if you DO need
usb_modeswitch go here and follow instructions as I believe that any
version you have in 8.04 is seriously outdated:
http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/
I know the step from 8.04 to 10.04 is not easy... I suffered when I went
from 8.04 to 9.10 myself... but I think you should consider that as a
first step. Try the modem running a LiveCD and you might find it is
recognised automagically.
