To play DVDs I do the following.
First my DVD player is loud so I copy the disk to my HD.
Start VLC click play, choose dvd and then pick the right dvd. It should
start playing the disk. In some cases I have had to wait almost 60 seconds
for it to start. No idea why. Then pause the play.
Start up DVDisaster and copy DVD to HD.
Now play with VLC up start up with a file. The name will end in .ISO
OR
You can use DVDrip to shrink the file straight from the DVD (takes about 2
hours on my amd x2) from 7gb to about 2gb. Don't do any scaling and just use
xvid with a bitrate of 1800 and use ac3 sound copy. Make sure you have the
right audio track!
This is also great for rented movies because you can rent a bunch, copy,
return disks, watch one a week for a while, erasing as you go, and then rent
more.
Bending the law in your country? Yes, but then so is using CSS.
