Black screen upon starting up Kubuntu

Keyboard is US. There are 2 alt keys, on each side of the space bar. Using 
the right sided alt key gets to SAK. Then alt F2 to get to login screen.
Using the left alt key reboots again. Strange, using clt key as well gets 
directly to the login screen. But sometimes have to press a couple of times.
But this is not my preferred method of booting; seems forced.

Anyway have got this sorted out and booting normally with quiet and splash. 
The new plymouth  screen (nice small white ubuntu text with 5 red dots below 
it) doesn't appear though after removing noveoa, or whatever they call it; 
I'll call it ahmadinejad. -   :)
