Okay, Andrew, I have to start by saying I've spent very little time in
Jaunty (long story) but if you boot okay without the splash, it usually
means the splash theme has some problem since you're not on nvidia,
(have some known problem). Try to install some other theme (system
settings) and see if that helps.

If Alvin's proposal solves your problem, please let us know as well.

I was planning to suggest you upgrade to Karmic, but with your message
above, I'll have to keep that on hold. Perhaps a new 'fresh' install as
opposed to an upgrade from existing Jaunty could help? Lucid still have
some rough edges especially with this type of problem; may be advisable
to wait till it is fully released (still suggest a fresh install).

As pointed out to me by Tom, a better instruction would be
alt + prt scr + k

This sends the system to a 'sort of' logoff; there are some bugs,
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/329644

and another is REISUB instead of 'K' to totally logoff. I personally do
not like to use these methods (I use them if forced to) and I may not be
the best guy to give you input on this. Google them and you'll probably
find better explanations than I can possibly give.

Perhaps it's practical to keep booting without the splash (modify
grub.cfg/menu.lst) and wait for full release of lucid. This is not a
major show stopper (unless of course you cannot boot up), and I wouldn't
worry too much if I were you.

Good luck, take care -Goh Lip
