Wireless not being activated automatically

I have a wireless network card that requires ndiswrapper in order to 
function. With both wicd and network-manager I have to activate the 
connection manually even though both are configured to start it 
automatically. What do I need to look at to determine why both these 
network managers cannot start the interface automatically, even though 
the required alias are in place.
