Just an update. Apparently I cannot play DVDs.

To wit:

[272181.551855] sr 1:0:0:0: [sr0]  Result: hostbyte=DID_OK
driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
[272181.551863] sr 1:0:0:0: [sr0] Sense Key : Illegal Request [current]
[272181.551870] sr 1:0:0:0: [sr0] Add. Sense: Read of scrambled sector
without authentication
[272181.551879] sr 1:0:0:0: [sr0] CDB: Read(10): 28 00 00 00 02 9a 00 00 02
00
[272181.551893] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 2664
[272181.551900] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 666
[272181.551906] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 667

Totally befuddled by this CD/DVD flakiness.

 cd-info --dvd /dev/sr0
