I'm a relative youngster of 75. My intro to computers was with NBS
on V-bombers - analogue, of course, and it had one germanium transistor,
the rest was a thermionic valves and relay logic. When I left the mob it
was still work on analogue computers, I had one job which was dismantling
an Elliot 405 digital machine, but all valves, console typewriter had 3ft4"
platen, the CR/LF was something to see(and feel). I had an Apple IIC as my
1st personal computer with UCSD Pascal. The first machine I used 'unix' on
was a PDP16 running VMunix with an 8-hole paper tape bootstrap - think
that was around 1970 but I could well be out a year or three - well
before X
appeared on the horizon any way. I bowed out into retirement having used
unix-all-sorts, solaris, hpux, Redhat, Next and others, all with
variations of X.
My first real windows based personal computer was one of three that retired
from work at the same time I did.
