Sata 3

Hi to all,
I have tried Ubuntu Server and Kubuntu on 2 Sata 3 drives in raid 1 
configuration.
It install with no problems, but, after a update via apt-get, or synaptic  the 
system is virtually unusable. trying do anything results in a lockup.
Now, is this a problem with the kernel or what?? I ask this because PCLinuxOS 
does much the same thing as does Centos 5.5. this is with both 32 bit and 64 
bit OS's
I would like some knowledgeable person to clarify the situation wrt Sata 3.
