twitter have changed their login authorization, and many clients have not
caught up yet. It has been called somewhere the "OAuth Apocalypse" :)
you will need to find a client that has been updated to use the OAuth system
twitter is now using, such as the latest Choqok version. I don't see the
latest official release in a ppa yet, but I have been using this one which has
been working fine

this repo requires you have KDE 4.5 installed, though.
